Description

This study evaluates teaching effectiveness in a distance education context using the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) as a guiding framework. The case study focuses on teaching and supervision practices at Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University (STOU), a leading open and distance learning institution that provides highly accessible study programs through a wide range of educational media. Within this system, lecturers are required to adapt their instructional design and supervisory approaches to effectively support students who learn remotely and independently, has supervised approximately 200 master’s degree students while simultaneously teaching several research-related courses, including Research in Agricultural Extension and Development, Independent Study, and Thesis. Teaching and supervision strategies were developed in alignment with key dimensions of the UKPSF, particularly in relation to effective teaching activities, core knowledge, and professional values. The instructional approach integrates the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and active learning, emphasizing flexibility, accessibility, and student-centered learning to accommodate diverse learner needs. To support distance learners, both print-based and online learning resources were utilized, along with individualized academic guidance tailored to students’ research topics and levels of research proficiency. Communication and supervision were facilitated through multiple channels, including email, telephone, and the LINE messaging application, enabling consistent interaction between the supervisor and students despite geographical distance. Findings from student feedback and supervision outcomes indicate high levels of satisfaction with the structured supervision process. The results highlight that effective feedback, continuous mentoring, and well-designed learning support are key factors in enhancing teaching effectiveness within the UKPSF framework in a distance education environment.
