Description

The continuous development of information technology (IT) has brought new development opportunities to the IT industry. Simultaneously, the human element is crucial to a company's development, particularly in project-based environments. The role of an IT project manager is pivotal as the integrator, communicator, and problem solver for the project team, requiring a comprehensive set of skills and knowledge in both business and technical domains. The evaluation criteria of the project manager's competence become particularly important, so it is imperative to build a competency model. This study centers on the competencies required for IT project managers in China. Initially, competency indicators suitable for the IT project manager were identified through a review of the literature and behavioral interviews with senior project managers. Subsequently, based on the identified indicators, data was collected through a cross-sectional questionnaire survey from 326 team members participating in IT projects. The data were then analyzed using SPSS software. Ultimately, a competency model for IT project managers was constructed, comprising four dimensions and 18 specific competencies. These dimensions are professional knowledge (PK), personal traits (PT), management skills (MS), and self-improvement (SI). This model is more objective, accurate, systematic and effective in the evaluation management of IT project managers. This paper adds value to existing research in the context of constructing competency model for IT project manager in China and has the potential to be applied in other industries and countries.
